State Game Land 227 sits on Locust Mountain north of Tamaqua, in the Rush and Schuylkill Township areas entirely within Schuylkill County. It covers 1,506 acres of roughly 94% forested mountain between about 600 and 1,400 feet.
In WMU 4C, hunters take deer, black bear, turkey, ruffed grouse, rabbits, squirrels, waterfowl, and furbearers. Five parking lots serve the land — three on LR 53097, one on SR 54, and one on Township Road 860 — all roads are closed year-round to public motor vehicles, and trout-fishing streams cross it. Season dates, bag limits, antlerless allocations, and Sunday-hunting days are set each year by the Pennsylvania Game Commission — confirm the current year before you hunt.
