The Coaldale Women’s Memorial Garden, adjacent to the borough’s Veterans Memorial Garden behind Borough Hall, is dedicated to all women — the servicewomen, mothers, wives, and nurses who supported those in harm’s way. Work began about 2009, with granite mural panels added through 2014.
Designed by William M. Gaddes of Nesquehoning, the garden centers on a black-granite wishing well embossed with murals of Gold Star mothers, wartime families, and Spanish-flu-era nurses. It also includes a Gold Star Mother Walk of Honor and a concrete angel statue; its designer described the women’s-memorial concept as one he believed to be unusual nationally.
