A memorial marker on North Main Street honors Corporal Anthony P. Damato (1922–1944), a Shenandoah-born Marine of the 22nd Marines. On the night of February 19–20, 1944, on Engebi Island in the Eniwetok Atoll, Damato threw himself on a Japanese grenade, dying to save two companions in his foxhole. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
The marker stands at the American Legion Post 792 named for him and reads “Lest We Forget … Recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, posthumously.” A large commemorative mural covers the adjacent wall of the same post.
